History of Debian
a student from Purdue University, USA, on August 16, 1993 was first introduced by Ian Murdock Debian. Debian name is derived from the combination of the name of Ian with ex-girlfriend Debra Lynn: Deb and Ian.The Debian Project grew slowly at first and released a version 0.9x in 1994 and 1995. The transfer in addition to the i386 architecture started in 1995. Version 1.x started in 1996.At first, Ian began by modifying the distribution of SLS (Softlanding Linux System). However, he was not satisfied with the SLS have been modified by him so that he believes that it is better to build the system (Linux distributions) from zero (in this case, Patrick Volkerding also seeks to modify the SLS. He managed and its distribution is known as "Slackware").In 1996, Bruce Perens replace Ian Murdoch as Project Leader. In the same year debian developer Ean Schuessler, took the initiative to form the Debian Social Contract and Debian Free Software Guidelines, provide basic standards of commitment to the development of debian distribution. He also formed the organization "Software in the Public Interest" to overshadow debian legally and law.In late 2000, the project to make changes in the debian archive and release management. As well as in the same year the developers start annual conference and workshop "debconf".On April 8, 2007, Debian GNU / Linux 4.0 release, codenamed "Etch". Debian releases latest version 2009, code-named "Lenny". deb is the extension of the Debian software package format and the name most often used for binary packages that way.Debian package is a standard Unix archive that includes two gzip, tar bzipped or lzmaed archives: one is in control, and other information that contains data. The canonical program for handling these packages is dpkg, most often through apt / aptitude. Some core Debian packages available as udebs ("micro deb"), and is usually only used to bootstrap a Debian Linux installation. Although the file using the file name extension udeb, they comply with the specifications of the same structure as normal deb. However, unlike their counterparts deb, only packets containing functional udeb important files. In particular, the documentation files are usually omitted. udeb package can not be installed on a standard Debian system.Debian package is also used in Debian-based distributions, such as Ubuntu and others. Currently there are dozens of Linux-based distribution to Debian, one of the most prominent and the phenomenon is Ubuntu
